Fire Restoration

Burning plug in an outlet and a list of the fire restoration steps Burning plug in an outlet and a list of the fire restoration steps

After the fire trucks leave, your home likely suffers from fire and smoke damage and extensive water damage from firefighting efforts. SERVPRO® has the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire condition.

Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you give us a call. Our specialist will ask a series of questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us arrive quickly with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We will carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, SERVPRO can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We will then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

SERVPRO uses specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We will clean all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Halloween Party Safety Tips

10/18/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of South Shasta County has been cleaning fires for over twenty years. Halloween is coming soon, so we offer these Halloween safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association so you can have a fun and safe celebration:

  • Use a battery-operated candle or glow stick in jack-o-lanterns
  • Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
  • When using electrical lighting to decorate your home, ensure it is used per the manufacturer’s instructions. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
  • Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes. Make sure all smoke alarms are working.

For families still planning to attend Halloween parties or go trick-or-treating:

  • When choosing costumes, stay away from long trailing fabric that could come in contact with open flames or other heat sources
  • Teach children to stay away from open flames, including jack-o-lanterns with candles in them
  • Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costumes

Fireworks in Sky Call us today at 530-241-2424

SERVPRO of South Shasta county wishes everyone a happy 4th of July! The National Fire Protection reports that the only safe way to view fireworks is to attend a professional show. Fireworks cause thousands of injuries each year, and children ages 10 to 14 have the highest rate of fireworks injury. Surprisingly, sparklers reach the temperature of 1200 degrees Fahrenheit (that’s 300 degrees higher than the temperature of melting glass) and account for roughly one-quarter of emergency room fireworks injuries.

If you are going to use fireworks at home, please follow these safety precautions.

  • Use sparklers and other legal novelties on a flat, hard surface. Do not light them on grass.
  • Use sparklers in an open area. Keep children and pets at least 30 feet away from all ignited sparklers.
  • Light only one item at a time and never attempt to re-light a “dud”
  • Do not use unwrapped items or items that may have been tampered with
  • Keep a fire extinguisher or water hose on hand for emergencies. It’s a good idea to drop used sparklers in a bucket of water
  • Only purchase fireworks from licensed vendors
  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks
  • Never have any portion of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse
  • Never carry sparklers in your pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers

Wildfires and Safety

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Wildfire season is upon us and so it is time to get your home ready to reduce fire danger. A defensible space is a space surrounding a home or other structure that is designed to reduce fire danger. It is a buffer you create and maintain between your home (or other structure) and the grass and trees that will stop or slow the spread of wildfire.

Some examples of creating a defensible space include:
•Placing gravel, pavers, and other non-combustible materials around the home. •Mulch should not be placed directly adjacent to the home.
•Removing dead leaves, branches, and other debris from the roof, deck, porches, or stairways to protect your home.
•Removing branches to no closer than 10 feet from your home.
•Limiting outdoor furniture to decks.

There isn't a single person who wants to experience a house fire. Their home ends up getting damaged or destroyed, along with most of their belongings.

A majority of fires are preventable. Are you taking the proper steps to prevent a fire in your home? Note the 3 common causes of home fires:

3) Electrical Equipment & Lighting
Wires, Extension Cords, & Heaters are in almost every home. Malfunctions can cause this equipment to go up in flames. One of the most common is decorative Christmas lights. When left on or unattended for a long period of time, these lights can overheat and cause serious damage.

Keep in Mind...
Unplug electrical equipment that's not in use.
Check any decorative lights periodically to avoiding overheating.

2) Dryers
Dryers are commonly known for starting fires, yet many don't take the time to properly maintain their dryer.

Keep in Mind...
Clean out the lint tray after every use.
Never run your dryer without the lint tray in place.

1) Cooking
According to the NFPA, 46% of home fires start in the kitchen with cooking. Cooking can easily be distracting, especially when making large meals.

Keep in Mind...
Never leave your stove top unattended.
Keep children away from hot areas in the kitchen.

This information will help you to minimize your risks of a home fire like never before. Aside from this information, Smoke Alarms need to be replaced and tested to help keep your household aware of any potential fire danger. Review and share this information to keep you and your loved ones safe from a home fire.

Costly Home Damage

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

dryer Call us today at 530-241-2424

An electric or gas clothes dryer is nearly an essential part of life in most homes. In families with children, the laundry can seem a daunting task, going on forever with washing machines and dryers churning and turning away slowly at a never-ending mountain of laundry.

But, all that convenience carries with it the possibility of a deadly hazard -- a dryer fire -- the leading cause of home fires in this country at the rate of about 15,000 every year.

*Don't dry dangerously*

While today's clothes dryer is in itself a safe piece of machinery and a feat of modern technology, it isn't fail-safe and requires regular preventive maintenance to prevent fires that could start in your lint trap or anywhere within your dryer's venting.

When lint traps aren't cleaned as often as they should be, the resulting build-up in the screen or other areas can cause the dryer to perform poorly, operate at elevated temperatures and possibly overheat -- with dangerous consequences. Vent systems must also be checked and cleaned to maintain proper air flow for the same reasons.

Problems may also occur if consumers place improper items in their dryers, such as foam backed rugs or athletic shoes, or vent their appliances with plastic or vinyl exhaust materials. Make sure that whatever you put in your dryer is approved and safe to place in a dryer. When in doubt, check the washing instructions on the tag of the clothing or consult the manufacturers website for more information.

House Fires Cause More Than Just Flame Damage

3/30/2022 (Permalink)

fire damage Call us today at 530-241-2424

3 Types of Damage Caused by House Fires

When you think about fire damage, you probably picture damage caused directly by flames; however, not only are flames not the only source of damage, the flames may not even cause the most damage. Smoke from the fire and water from the firefighting effort may cause as much or more damage than the fire itself.

1. Heat and Flames

The intense heat from a fire can melt plastics, wiring, electronics, and other items. The flames can destroy property made from combustible materials, such as wood, cloth, or foam. Additionally, fires may cause chemical reactions that may create caustic substances that can damage property.

2. Smoke

Smoke can penetrate surfaces causing fire damage from stains and smells that may be difficult to remove. Professional fire restoration services in South Shasta County, CA may be able to assist in removing smoke stains and smells from furniture, walls, carpets, and other items. Smoke can also contaminate items such as food and medications. These items may need to be thrown away due to safety concerns.

3. Water

Unfortunately, the water used to extinguish fires can often cause substantial damage to property. A fire hose sprays water at rates of up to 125 gallons per minute. If you have ever accidentally flooded your bathroom, you probably know that substantial damage can be caused to your property by even relatively small amounts of water. The enormous amount of water sprayed on your property to put out a fire can cause severe property damage.

In addition to soaking into furniture, warping wood, and destroying drywall, water can damage electronics, clothing, flooring, and potentially lead to mold growth. It is important to promptly clean up water damage to avoid unnecessary additional damage.

Fire damage, water, and smoke can combine to severely damage a home during a house fire. Prompt fire restoration services can help mitigate damages and restore your property to preloss condition.

Are Your Alarms Ready?

3/25/2022 (Permalink)

shmoke Call us today at 530-241-2424

Having functional fire alarms in your house is one if the most important things you can do to stay prepared if a fire did happen. It is a small item that often get overlooked but with just a few minutes of your time it could save yours and your families lives.

According to www.cpsc.gov, these are the reasons why smoke alarms are so important and where in the household they should be placed.

Why Are Smoke Alarms Important?

Every year in the United States, about 2,000 people lose their lives in residential fires. During a fire, smoke and deadly gases tend to spread further and faster than heat. This is one reason why most fire victims die from inhalation of smoke and toxic gases, not from burns. A majority of fatal fires happen when families are asleep because occupants are unaware of the fire until there is not adequate time to escape. A smoke alarm stands guard around the clock, and when it first senses smoke, it sounds a shrill alarm. This often allows a family the precious, but limited, time needed to escape. About two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.  Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms are considered to be one of the best and least expensive means of providing an early warning of a potentially deadly fire and could reduce by almost half the risk of dying from a fire in your home.

Where Should Smoke Alarms be Installed?

Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms A smoke alarm should be installed and maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions. When installing a smoke alarm, many factors influence where you will place the alarm, including how many are to be installed.  Consider placing alarms along your escape path to assist in egress in limited-visibility conditions. In general, you should place alarms in the center of a ceiling or, if you place them on a wall, they should be near the ceiling.

There are numerous causes of fires in homes and businesses. Depending on what materials burn, this can produce different types of smoke and soot.

Below is a list of the types of smoke and soot and their characteristics:

Wet Smoke – Caused by burning plastics and synthetic materials; Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary.

Be Ready for Wildfires

7/15/2021 (Permalink)

wildfire Call 530-241-2424 to clean up and restore your household in the case of a fire damage.

Are you ready?

Wildfire season is officially here in the state of California and it is very important to be prepared. An evacuation plan requires the involvement of every household member and there are real benefits to being prepared.

Here are three steps to be prepared for Wildfire season:

1.Map out a wildfire action plan - This requires the participation of each household member.

Here is a checklist to help you prepare a wildfire action plan.

  • Choose an emergency meeting location outside of the fire hazard area.
  • Plan several different escape routes and practice them regularly.
  • Have fire extinguishers in place and teach every household member how to properly use them.
  • Ensure that your household members know where your gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them safely.
  • Have a radio or scanner so that you can stay updated on fire alerts
  • Designate an out-of-area friend or relative as a point of contact so that you can communicate with household members in case of separation.
  • Maintain a list of emergency contact numbers. Keep these posted near your phone and in your emergency supply kit.
  • Ensure to have evacuation plans for pets, large animals such as horses, and other livestock.
  1. Assemble an emergency disaster supply kit – This kit will contain a collection of necessities your household will need in the case of an emergency. Each household member should have their own emergency kit. It is also recommended everyone keeps an emergency kit in their vehicle in case access to the household is not available.

Here is an official check list to go by: https://www.ready.gov/kit

  1. Make a household communication plan – Communication networks and electricity may be compromised in a wildfire and that is why it is important to have a communication plan in place.

Every member of the household should be considered in creating this plan. It is a must that the methods are well communicated with everyone at a level that they understand. Rehearsing this plan regularly will help assure that everyone is on the same page and know exactly what to do in case of an emergency.

Here at SERVPRO of South Shasta County we understand how serious wildfire season is an that is why we highly recommend you follow these steps and work to assure the safety of your household. How To Prevent Electrical Fires

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

fire hazard SERVPRO of South Shasta County for all your Fire Restoration Needs. Contact Us At: 530-241-2424

Electrical fires make up for 6.3% of residential fires and many industrial fires. Whenever electricity is in use there will be the potential of a fire breakout. Here are just a few common sources of electrical fires that SERVPRO of South Shasta County has encountered below.

Overloading a Circuit – To many units plugged into a single circuit can create a fire risk.  Circuit breakers usually compensate for this, but there is always a chance wires or other components will overheat.

Extension Cords – Cords tend to run across the floor and other risky areas which can lead to damaged and exposed wires. This exposure around flammable materials can be a dangerous fire risk.

Faulty Outlets – A damaged or unproperly installed electrical outlet has the potential to cause a spark or other events that may cause a fire.

Light Fixtures – If a light bulb is installed that exceeds the wattage limit, or there isn’t proper ventilation to a light fixture, it may result in a fire.

SERVPRO of South Shasta County has found the best way to prevent electrical fires is to assure that all electrical work is done by a trained and qualified electrician.  Having electrical work done properly can potentially save you money and hassles in the future. It is also important to inspect and test your electrical systems for potential issues on a regular basis so you can eliminate any problems before they become a fire disaster.

Why Winter Fires Occur and How to Prevent Them

12/9/2019 (Permalink)

Snow covered tree Call South Shasta County SERVPRO at 530-241-2424.

While house fires can occur for a variety of reasons, conditions in the winter make them more likely to occur.

In fact, winter is the time of the year that contains the most house fire occurrences every year. To practice fire safety during the colder months, it is important to note why these fires occur and how to prevent them.

Why Winter House Fires Are More Likely

An Increase in Cooking
Cooking is always the top reason behind house fires throughout the year, but even this figure increases in colder months. Between an increased frequency of cooking and baking as well as seasonal recipes being used, kitchens are a hotbed for fire starters if cooking is not performed safely.

The Risk of Heaters
It is not unwise to use heaters and fireplaces during the winter months, but it is important to be safe when they are utilized. Errors in heating methods cause the second most amount of fires when the weather is colder, so utilizing safety features and making sure fireplaces cannot create traveling sparks is key.

Candles and Decorations
Decoration safety is not a widely regarded caution to take note of, but it is highly important during winter. Many winter holidays are decorated for with candles, but these open flames can cause serious fire hazards if they are left unattended. For electronics such as lights, checking their cords for any fraying or tears is important to prevent a fire from beginning.

<h3you-can-prevent-winter-fires">How You Can Prevent Winter Fires

Taking note of the reasons a fire can occur is important, as is remembering tips for fire safety. Here are some of our favorite winter-weather fire safety tips to always keep in mind when cooking, decorating or doing other winter activities:

  • Check smoke alarms once every 30 days and replace every 10 years.
  • Always monitor open flames.
  • Select space heaters with automatic shut-offs in case they tip over.
  • Utilize a screen every time you use a fireplace.
  • Draft and practice an emergency escape plan with your household.

Fire Damaged Bathroom Wall Call SERVPRO Of South Shasta County at 530-241-2424 to do security board up.

Fire experts agree, people have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late to get out. In a matter of moments, a small flame can become a major fire, making it critical to be prepared and have an escape plan in place. A survey conducted by the American Red Cross shows only 26 percent of families have developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. Once a plan is developed, it is critical everyone in the home understands the plan; the best way to do this is by practicing the escape plan at least twice a year. Increase your chance of surviving a fire by ensuring you have working smoke detectors in place, building an escape plan, and then practicing the escape plan. The following are a few suggestions to help you develop an emergency escape plan.

Draw a map of each level of your home and show all doors and windows. Find two ways to get out of each room. Make sure all doors and windows that lead outside open easily.

Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second and third floors. Only purchase collapsible escape ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory. Store them near the window where they will be used.

Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they’ve escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.

Teach children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. Plan for everyone in your home with special considerations for elderly or disabled individuals.

Practice your fire escape plan during the day and at nighttime.

Smoke in the air from recent wildfires SERVPRO of South Shasta County provides fire, soot and water damage restoration service in Shasta County

The active wildfires here in Southern California are increasing their impact as growing Santa Ana winds add fuel to these devastating blazes that are encroaching in our area. According to the New York Times, new fires broke out in Malibu on December 7, with at least 96,000 acres already burned in the Ventura area and 116,000 acres in Los Angeles County. Evacuations have closed hundreds of schools and forced 200,000 of our neighbors to seek safety. The “Thomas Fire” in the Ventura area continues to burn with the aid of strong winds. This fire has caused the closure of the 101 freeway and a boil-water advisory was issued for Ventura County. Santa Ana winds The Santa Ana winds that are enabling the fires to rapidly increase their reach can have speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. They are not expected to diminish until Friday into Saturday at the earliest. The National Weather Service has warned of “very rapid fire growth” in this area. SERVPRO Meteorologist Lela Davis said that the Santa Ana winds were already very dry when they reached the Southern California valley, allowing them to quickly pull moisture out of vegetation, increasing the risk for wildfires. For the first time ever, a purple wind warning was issued for today under the color-coded system used to advise about high winds. This purple warning pushed wind expectations from the “high” category to “extreme”. Ready to help Here at SERVPRO of South Shasta County we are monitoring this wildfire situation closely. Our thoughts are with those neighbors who may be put in harms’ way during this event. In many cases, a wildfire can result in a total loss for a home or business, but in others it may be a partial loss, or can result in mild smoke damage. If your home or business is affected by a wildfire, SERVPRO of South Shasta County is Here to Help®.
