Meet our Team- Contests Supervisor- Twyla

Twyla, a team member, standing in front of a palm tree for her picture Twyla poses for her picture in the lobby of our office.

Another Meet Our Team Monday is here!

Shortly before Christmas, we were hiring some new members for our team, and Twyla came to us. With prior industry knowledge and experience, she has been a wonderful help to us and our customers.

When a fire or water loss occurs, often times the contents of a home or business need to be packed up where they are taken to be cleaned, restored, and/or stored until the restoration work is complete.

Twyla and her crew care for each item as if it were their own carefully packaging and documenting the contents of each box and location from which those items came.Thank you, Twyla, for all you hard work and dedication to our team and customers. #MeetOurTeamMonday #SERVPROofsouthshastacounty #SERVPROteamwilliams #contentscleaning

Tips for Creating an Insurance Inventory List

When you have a fire or water damage emergency, having an up-to-date home inventory list makes it easier to settle insurance claims. SERVPRO of South Shasta County offers these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for using technology to make your home inventory easier.

  • Take pictures – Create a photo record of your belongings. Capture important individual items and entire rooms, closets, or drawers. Label your photos with what’s pictured, where you bought it, the make or model—whatever information might be important to replacing or getting reimbursed for the item. Use your smartphone or digital camera—some give you the capability to put in the item’s description when saving the photo.
  • Tape it – Walk through your house or apartment, videotaping and describing the contents. For example, you might describe the contents of a kitchen cabinet: “Poppies on Blue by Lenox, service for 12 that includes a dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, cup, and saucer. Purchased in 2015.”
  • Use an app – Many mobile app options can help you create and store a room-by-room record of your belongings.

Tips for Preparing for a Power Outage

power out Call us today at 530-241-2424

SERVPRO of South Shasta County restores storm damage throughout the year. Here are some tips from the American Red Cross for preparing in advance for a power outage:

  • Create a support network. Identify people who can help you stay at home or evacuate during an extended power outage. Keep a paper copy of your contact list.
  • Stay connected and alert. Sign up for alert systems and apps for text alerts. Have communication devices that work without home power, including a crank or battery radio, a non-cordless home phone, chargers/batteries for your cell phones and your computers.
  • Stock food and water. Store non-perishable food and water supplies for at least two weeks. Plan to use coolers and ice to extend food refrigeration and keep a thermometer in the fridge, freezer, or cooler to monitor the food temperature.
  • Know and plan for your personal and medical electrical needs. Take an inventory of your electrical needs. Consider backup and non-power alternatives for lighting, communication, medical devices, refrigerated medicine, cooking, garage doors, locks, and elevators. Discuss a plan with your doctors for your medical needs.

Tips for Making an Insurance Claim

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

IICRC Certified Logo Call SERVPRO of South Shasta County at 530-241-2424

Something to Know:

Every insurance policy is different. Therefore, what will be covered may only be determined by reading your policy or calling your insurance agent/insurance company to have them determine coverage.

Knowledge is Power:

Be sure you know who your insurance company is and how to contact them. You may want to list the phone number for your insurance company on your refrigerator for easy access. You could also add your insurance company's 24 hour emergency contact number to your cell phone to have ready at all times. You never know when this information is going to be important.

Stay Calm:

This experience can be upsetting. It's important to stay calm when you are talking to your insurance company so they can ask all the essential questions to set up your claim and get the ball rolling.

Take Pictures:

Document the situation every step of the way to help your insurance company understand the full extent of the damage. Take pictures of every room that sustained damage, structural materials affected and personal items. These pictures will help your adjuster understand the full picture of what happened and what will be involved in restoring your house and the contents affected.

Ask Questions:

Feel free to ask as many questions as you can think of to your insurance company. It's important to know what your roles are and what your insurance company will be doing for you.

Use a company with IICRC Certified Technicians:

While there are many companies that may be willing to help you clean up from your water damage, it is important to utilize a company that has technicians who have been trained to properly perform mitigation. SERVPRO of South Shasta County prides itself on the fact that our technicians are IICRC certified. Our technicians go through on-the-job training and complete IICRC training so that we can keep up with the latest techniques and technologies to dry your home out quickly to eliminate further damage. Education and training are very important to satisfying our customers

Keep Smoke Out!

Hvac Contact us today at: 530-241-2424 Here to Help® and Ready to Respond.

Become familiar with your HVAC system or air conditioner system so you can adjust it and keep smoke out!

Central HVAC System

-Find out if it has a fresh air intake and find out how to close it or turn the system to recirculate mode.

-Make sure your filter is in good condition and fits the filter slot properly.

-Upgrade to a MERV 13 or higher rated filter if your HVAC system can accommodate it.

Evaporative Cooler

-Avoid using evaporative coolers in smokey conditions because it will only pull in more smoke.

-Consider other cooling systems such as fans or window air conditioners.

Window Air Conditioner

-Learn how to close the outdoor air damper.

-If you are unable to close the damper, consider preparing other cooling options such as a fan.

-Verify that the seal between the A/C and the window is as tight as possible.

Portable Air Conditioner

-These are not recommended to use in smokey conditions because it can result in more smoke being brought inside.

-It best to consider other options such as a fan or window air conditioner.

-If you have a portable air conditioner with two hoses make sure that the seal between the window vent kit and the window is as tight as possible.

SERVPRO of South Shasta County has years of experience and knowledge in smoke damage restoration. We have the specialists and the tools to properly inspect and restore your home and or place of business.

Do NOT Plug These Into Your Power Strip

8/6/2021 (Permalink)

halt Call SERVPRO of South Shasta County at: 530-241-2424

Power strips can be a convenient solution when you have a shortage of electrical outlets. What most people are not mindful of is the fact power strips are only designed to handle electronics that pull a small amount of power. A power strip is primarily designed to handle AV equipment or low-power household items like lamps, laptops, tablets, or smartphones. If you end up plugging a device or appliance into a power strip that needs a large amount of electricity to function, you run the risk of overloading the power strip and potentially starting an electrical fire.

Here are 3 appliances SERVPRO of South Shasta County recommends you should never plug into a power strip:

Coffee Maker

Most coffee makers require quite a bit of amperage to operate. It is recommended to plug your coffee maker directly into an outlet, so you do not run the risk of an electrical fire.

Microwave Oven

We all love the convenience of using our microwave for food preparation, thawing, cooking, and reheating food. Unfortunately, a microwave requires more energy than a power strip can provide. Your microwave should have its own dedicated power outlet just like your conventional electric oven.

Hair-Care Appliances

Hair dryers, curling irons, and flat irons all pull an immense amount of electricity to function. Hair dressing appliances that operate with heat should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet. Even further it is a good idea to use a GFCI outlet to avoid the possibility of water exposure.
